Restaurant

Welcome to the Osteria Sanso “Osteria” is an Italian tavern where people come to eat and drink, sitting at long tables while calling out for the ‘Oste (Host) as tradition would have it, to bring the food and wine of the day as quickly as possible!

Signore Eugenio Sanso brings to this unique restaurant the culmination of his knowledge, experience and colourful life, having worked in some of Europe’s finest establishments, the famed George V in Paris and Savoy in London. He has served many famous celebrities including Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jnr, Bob Hope, Sofia Loren, Shirley Bassey, Barney Kessel, Joe Pass, Herb Ellis, Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, and many more.

When ‘Tony’ (as he is affectionately known by his friends) left his beloved home in the romantic City of Florence in 1964 to come to Australia, and started the first, of his many Restaurants in Adelaide in 1969, and purchased The Britannia Hotel in 2001 for his latest venture. He has become well known and respected for his perfectionist approach in pleasing both the palate and wishes of his clients. Restaurants Tony has run include The Old Mill, The Stable, The Gawler Mill, Villa Sanso, Fontana di Trevi, Chianti, Via Veneto, Fiorentino, Tony’s Bistro, Osteria Sanso in the city and finally Osteria Sanso in Kanmantoo.

Tony believes good food starts with only the best of ingredients and his dearest wife Zeny looks after the organic garden with herbs and vegetables served at your table. All with a passion of food, joy of music and love of people ‘WHAT CAN A MAN DO’? Tony says ‘BUON APPETITO’ EAT AND ENJOY!

The Britannia Hotel was built between 1848 and 1850 interestingly enough it held a licence for only six years from 1857 to 1863. It was purchased after the licence had ceased by John Daly a boot maker who extended the building into a L shape with the frontage to the street. He traded for a long time as store keeper and also run the Post Office.

The Britannia Hotel after being refurbished and licensed by Tony and Zeny Sanso has brought new lift back to this historically interesting sight. The building was made of local stone and timber with 2 feet thick walls in some areas. Huge slabs of red gum were used as support beams and the large an underground cellar has been retained. The original character of the main dining room is seen in the huon pine floorboards and the large double windows.

The frontage with the extended veranda retains the stone footpath, you can almost imagine the sound of a horse and buggy rolling up to the Hotel’s original front door. With surrounding gum trees including a Mulberry tree, all well over a 100 years old, there is much to enjoy at the Osteria Sanso with its special Tuscan cuisine.
