Mary MacKillop Centre is the only one of its type in Adelaide. This interpretive centre highlights aspects of the educational and welfare work done by an Australian woman, Mary MacKillop and the Sisters of St Joseph in nineteenth century South Australia. You will find a well set up, three dimensional exhibition entitled What would have become of them? and there learn something of the nature and extent of the charitable work done by the Sisters among the disadvantaged, especially women and children.
Students of South Australian social history will find that this exhibition gives a rare insight into the life of the less well off in nineteenth century South Australia and how one group did all they could to better their lot.
After spending an hour or so making your way around the display you can spend some time browsing among the books, videos and Mary MacKillop memorabilia on sale in the museum shop.
Individuals as well as school, parish or community groups are most welcome. Bookings are essential for groups. Seating capacity of 40.
The adjacent historic Convent Chapel which is still in use, was erected by Mary MacKillop and opened in 1876. It is available for private reflection.
