Nestled in the heart of the Light Region surrounded by rolling hills, picturesque nature trails and only one hour drive north of Adelaide.  Just like the final piece of a beautiful mosaic, Kapunda fits perfectly between the famous Clare and Barossa Valleys, providing a fascinating tourist destination for you to discover.

Kapunda’s claim to fame as Australia’s oldest mining town started in 1842 with the discovery of copper.  Diverse and charming, with superb wineries scattered throughout some of south Australia’s premium farming country will be hard to resist.  As the roads wind through the valleys and plains, history spills into the township in the shape of magnificent churches, buildings and rural homesteads, once owned by the Kidman and Dutton pastoral empires.

The Mawson, Heysen and Kidman trails meander through Kapunda’s countryside offering its own particular charm.  On the southern entrance to Kapunda marvel at our “Map” the miner statue standing at 8 metres. A tribute to the miners who contributed so much to South Australia’s prosperity.

Pick-up a Heritage Trail map from the Visitor Information Centre in the beautiful Thomson building. Don’t forget to see the Interpretive display in the basement, get an enticing taste of the Light Region and find out the secrets behind our colourful history.

Everything within walking distance, visit the Art Galleries, museums and copper mine, feel the history with every step or have a meal at one of our historic hotels.

Stay and relax at the Tourist and Leisure Park, or our numerous beautiful presented Bed & Breakfast homes. Combining history, food and wine, Kapunda is a modern country town with excellent facilities and friendly old-style values.

Our staff at the Kapunda Visitor Information Centre located in the main street, look forward to meeting you.  South Australia Visitor Guides, books, DVD’s and souvenirs always available.
